Full foil or partial foil

Foiling packs sections of hair into foil so the lightener can work with heat and without touching the surrounding strands. It gives more lift and more control than freehand painting, which is why it is still the technique of choice when you want genuine brightness rather than a soft sun-kissed effect.

A full foil covers the whole head — front, sides, crown, back — and is what you want if the goal is an overall lighter result or maximum dimension throughout. A partial foil concentrates on the top and sides, the areas that actually show when your hair is down. If you wear your hair up constantly, a partial can look unfinished from behind; if you wear it down, it does most of the visible work for less money and less time in the chair.

Face-framing and money pieces

The brightest pieces around the face do a disproportionate amount of work. They catch light where people actually look at you, and they can be adjusted in intensity from a whisper to a full contrast money piece without changing anything else about your color.

This is also the easiest thing to change your mind about later. If you want to try more contrast, it can be pushed at the next appointment; if it is too much, it tones down easily.

Foils compared with balayage

The short version: foils lift more and give a more even, higher-contrast result; balayage grows out more softly and asks less of your calendar.

Foils generally want refreshing every six to ten weeks depending on how much contrast you are carrying and how fast your hair grows, because the regrowth line is more defined. That is a real commitment and worth being honest with yourself about before booking. Plenty of guests land on a hybrid — foils through the top for brightness, painted pieces underneath for softness — which is a conversation to have at the consultation.

Keeping the tone right

Freshly lifted hair is toned at the end of the service, and that toner is doing a lot of the work you see in the mirror. It also fades faster than the lift underneath it. Warmth creeping back in after a few weeks is normal and expected, not a sign the service failed.

A gloss between appointments resets it quickly and cheaply. Beyond that: heat protectant, cooler water when you can stand it, and purple shampoo once or twice a week rather than daily. Hard water is a real factor across a lot of metro Detroit, and a shower filter genuinely helps blondes hold their tone longer.
